National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Tong Thi Phong received a European Parliament (EP) delegation for relations with Southeast Asian and ASEAN countries led by Wermer Langen, in Hanoi on March 15.
Ms Phong spoke highly of the contributions of EP members to cooperative relations for the sake of peace, stability and mutual understanding in the world.
She said that the Vietnamese NA and the EP still see a lot of potential for cooperation and Vietnam needs the EPs assistance in law-making and addressing issues relating to trade disputes.
She suggested the EP and its member parliaments strengthen the exchange of delegations with Vietnam, thus boosting the sharing of information and experiences as well as helping Vietnam improve its law-makers capacity.
While affirming Vietnam always respects, protects and cares for the legitimate rights and interests of the people, the NA Vice Chairwoman expressed her wish that EP parliamentarians would pay more attention to studying Vietnams situation in order to support the countrys development programmes.
For his part, Wermer Langen expressed his belief that the relationship between the EP and the Vietnamese NA will flourish in the future and said the EP is ready to cooperate with the Vietnamese legislature.
On the same day, the EP parliamentarians held talks with Nguyen Van Son, Chairman of the Committee for External Relations who affirmed its consistent policy of attaching importance to an equal partnership and to long-term, comprehensive cooperation with the EU.
The EP delegation also worked with the NA Law Committee.
