Saigon Co.opMart earmarks VND3 billion for environment program

Saigon Co.op, Vietnams leading supermarket chain operator, is offering free paper shopping baskets and encouraging customers to use environmentally friendly bags under a program called Co.opMart for a Green Environment which began on Monday and runs until June 30.

Saigon Co.op said it would spend VND3 billion to reduce the use of non-biodegradable plastic bags.

Under the program, the chain on Monday started a paper bag making week at its 43 Co.opMart supermarkets to encourage staff and customers to use paper calendars, newspapers and magazines to make bags to protect the environment.

These bags will be used to supply customers to welcome Earth Hour on March 27. On this day, the chain will stop supplying plastic bags. Customers can buy reusable bags for VND3,200 each, half the regular price, or use free paper bags.

Customers who spend over VND200,000 and use an environmentally friendly bag will receive a free 330ml V-fresh smoothie box and a green food coupon worth VND5,000 to buy fruit or vegetables at the chain.

According to the chain, after many programs to give away and sell reusable bags at its supermarkets nationwide,
more shoppers are gradually becoming familiar with these "green environment" bags to replace plastic bags which are used only once.
