Largest hydro-power plant progresses smoothly

With a diameter of 15.589 metres, a height of 2.816 metres, and weighing 1,000 tonnes, it is the heaviest hydro-electric power rotor in Vietnam. According to the Son La plant management board, the rotor installation will be followed by a test run of the plants auxiliary systems equipment in September and October.

Engineers on August 20 successfully installed the rotor of the first turbine of the Son La hydro-electric power plant to enable the countrys largest hydro-electric plant to start running on December 25 as scheduled.

The first group of turbines will undergo a test run from November 15 to 30 before it begins generating power on December 25, 2010 as planned.

The Son La power plant has six turbines with a combined capacity of 2,400 MW.

Almost 18,000 households in Son La, Dien Bien and Lai Chau provinces have been relocated to provide land for the Son La plant, which has a total investment capital of over VND 42.47 trillion.

The power plan is expected to be fully completed by 2012.
