Vietnam nursery schools cry about teacher shortag

The privately run Thanh Da Nursery School has announced it urgently needs teachers for the new school year. Thanh Das Headmaster said the school still needs 10 teachers. The notice on staff recruitment clearly stipulates that candidates who are recent graduates are preferred, while high salaries will be offered to new teachers.

The new school year begins today, August 16. Meanwhile, many nursery schools still complain that they lack teachers and day-care assistants.

Teachers lacking at all schools

At the pre-school and primary education faculties at Saigon University, one can easily see numerous notices recruiting nursery school teachers and daycare assistants. An international nursery school in District 7 in HCM City has announced it is looking for 10 teachers with no special requirements. Candidates are not required to have much experience, while they can apply for the job even if they do not have permanent residency in HCM City. Meanwhile, the school promises to offer high salaries and good working conditions.

According to Le Thi Diep, Deputy Head of the Education Sub-department in District 4 of HCM City, the schools in the locality are still lacking five teachers after they received nineteen teachers provided by the HCM City Education and Training Department. Diep said that they worry about the quality of the teachers, especially since many of the nineteen new teachers are young and do not have much experience.

The situation seems to be more serious at the schools in the suburban areas of the city or at privately run schools. In order to find enough teachers and day-care assistants, the privately run Be Yeu Nursery School in District 12 has had to place advertisements recruiting teachers in many newspapers. Apollo, another privately run school, has announced it urgently needs ten teachers and is willing to provide an attractive compensation package.

Even Nguyen Tat Thanh School, a "star" school in HCM City, also said it is lacking three teachers.

Where are the daycare assistants and healthcare officers?

Aside from teachers, nursery schools are also lacking daycare assistants, which are very difficult to recruit nowadays.

Day-care assistants have to arrive at school as early as 5.30 am. They have to clean classrooms, spread out carpets, feed children, arrange toys, and do many other things. They even have to go to school on Saturdays.

According to Nguyen Thi Kim Van, Headmaster of Hoa Lu School in District 1 in HCM City, day-care assistants have to work hard, so it is understandable why very few people want to take the job.

However, the biggest problem is that daycare assistants are not listed in the payrolls of schools, which means that the State does not pay money for daycare assistants. As a result, schools have to pay daycare assistants themselves with tuition fees from childrens parents.

According to Diep, since it is very difficult to look for daycare assistants, many schools have resorted to recruiting students who have only finished high school to be daycare assistants. However, these students do not have adequate experience.

Healthcare officers are also lacking at nursery schools. Nowadays, in order to become a healthcare officer at a nursery school, one must graduate from intermediate school, a two-year training course. However, many who people finish a two-year training course do not want to work for a nursery school, since a salary of two million dong a month is too low for someone with those qualifications.
