Highest pesticide residue on apples, pears and mandarin oranges from China

Pesticide residue on 330 samples of fruit tested in 2009 is nearly 3 percent on average, with the highest levels on red apples, pears and mandarin oranges from China, according to a March 24 report by a conference reviewing the national program on food hygiene.

The Thai Nguyen Province Preventive Health Department also reported pesticide residue on three of ten samples of Chinese red apples, two exceeding permitted levels. In addition, of ten samples of Chinese pears, one contained pesticide residues higher than the permitted threshold.

Of nearly 1500 samples of meat, nearly 41 percent were infected with Salmonella bacterium (causing digestive disease). HCM City and Dong Nai province account for 84-95 percent of the infected samples.

Nguyen Cong Khan, chief of the Agency for Food Hygiene, revealed that, in 2009, major violations detected at food shops used labels with inaccurate information in 20-40 percent of the cases.

Over one third of food shops, mainly in Tra Vinh, Vinh Long, Khanh Hoa, Yen Bai and Ninh Binh provinces, broke rules on food hygiene, but were not fined.
