Acute diarrhea kills six children in northern Vietnam

The kids were from Lung Man Village, which was the hardest hit area in Duc Hanh Commune, where 140 people, mainly children, have caught the intestinal affliction this year, the center said.

Six children have died from acute diarrhea in the northern Vietnamese province of Cao Bang since May 19, according to the provincial Preventive Health Center.

So far local health agencies have isolated the patients, and sent medical teams to sterilize affected areas.

In the meantime, Nguyen Van Thang, vice director of the health department in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre reported on Friday that 26 local people have contracted cholera this year, while over 240 have suffered from acute diarrhea.

They have also found the bacterium that causes the debilitating and sometimes fatal disease in the Mo Cay River, along which areas with infection cases are located, according to Thang.

However, deputy minister of health Trinh Quan Huan said Vietnam had yet to officially declare a cholera outbreak in Ben Tre.

Cholera, which infected hundreds of people in the northern Vietnam in 2008 and 2009, has also been reported in several other provinces and cities this year, including Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.
