Vietnam's Seafood Exports Down 11 per cent to US$1.7B in First Half of 2009

Vietnam was estimated to have earned US$1.7 billion from seafood exports in the first half this year, down 11 per cent against the same period last year. The decrease in earnings is mostly attributed to the fact that many Vietnamese seafood firms have cut their export prices to stimulate demand amid the global economic recession. In June alone, domestic firms reportedly netted US$320 million.

In the first six months, the European Union (EU) ranked first among markets consuming US$357 million worth of Vietnamese seafood, making up 26 per cent of the country’s seafood exports. Japan follows the EU in second place.   Among Vietnamese seafood export products, pangasius fish tops the list with the U.S. and the EU becoming the biggest importers, while shrimp ranks second thanks to demand from the Japanese market.   The Russian market is growing in importance as well with a large and diversified consumption demand for pangasius fish.
